Dr. Ana Muresan, Chapter President stepping down in May

We would like to congratulate Dr. Ana Muresan on her new position as a United States patent examiner and thank her for her service as President of Rho Tau GWIS! She will be moving to Washington, DC at the beginning of May and will be sorely missed, but we know Omicron GWIS has gained a valuable member. Our remaining officers will support the chapter until elections in July!

Dr. Susan Henning Lifetime Lecture

Dr. Susan Henning

Dr. Susan Henning (UNC-Chapel Hill) will be presenting her story as a successful scientist at UNC in the BCBS Auditorium. Dr. Henning was recognized as a National Honoree by GWIS in 1999 and was named an “Outstanding American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) Woman in Science” in 2008. She is the recipient of a MERIT Award from the NIH and was named a Davenport Distinguished Lecturer by the American Physiological Society. We are honored to hear from her!

“Postnatal GI Development: The Journey from Steroids to Stem Cell”

Location: UNC Chapel Hill, Blue Cross Blue Shield Auditorium in the Michael Hooker Research Bldg, MHRC Room 0001. Entrance can be made from either the front of the building, along S. Columbia St, or in the back of the building, along Pittsboro St. Once in the Michael Hooker Research Center building, attendees should take the elevator or stairs to the ground floor (one flight down) and the large auditorium, the “Blue Cross Blue Shield Auditorium” is on the right when exiting the elevator. April 20, 2012 4-11 PM – GWIS Booth at Nature Research Center Grand Opening, NC Museum of Natural Science [volunteers needed]

During NC Science festival ( http://www.ncsciencefestival.org ) on April 20, 2012 from 4-11 PM,  GWIS will have a booth presentation  at the Triangle Science & Engineering Expo with science experiment demonstrations,  at Nature Research Center Grand Opening, NC Museum of Natural Science.

For the NC Science Festival, GWIS will perform two science experiments.  The Grape Soda Column Chromatographywill compare with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Column liquid chromatography (LC) is used in industry to separate, isolate and purify components of mixtures and to detect trace components in mixtures.

The second experiments we will conduct is a Starch Iodine Reaction which will give a purple colored complex, used as a general redox indicator that can be used in medical tests.

Graduate Women in Science, Ro Tau Chapter and Durham SpiritsCo (www.durhamspiritscompany.com) invite you to a Food Science presentation. This exciting demonstration will involve an interactive part with participants and food sampling!

Katie Coleman, owner and chef of Durham Spirits Co., graduated from The Culinary Institute of America, and she has spent the last ten years cooking all over the world. Katie also has had the privilege of cooking for Anthony Bourdain.
